Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarship

What you will need

• ✓ Confirmation of participation in the SYA program by both the student and the high school

About this award

You receive a $1,000 scholarship. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a high school graduate in Saskatchewan who is dedicated to starting a career in the skilled trades. No deadline is posted publicly — before you start the application, check the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC — the agency that manages trade certifications in the province)'s program page or call their office to confirm when applications open and close this year. Your school nominates you using a form sent by the SATCC. They choose approximately 100 scholarships each year based on your achievements and your dedication to the skilled trades. Scholarship certificates are made available for presentation at your graduation ceremony or another event. Ask the SATCC during your application how the funds are delivered to you after the ceremony so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the SATCC whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You qualify if you are a high school graduate from anywhere in Saskatchewan. Both you and your high school must participate in the SYA (Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship — a program introducing students to trades) program. You must complete high school in the current school year and hold a completed SYA Passport. Additionally, within two years of completing high school, you must either enter a contract of apprenticeship in a designated skilled trade and successfully complete the first level of technical training, or complete a Saskatchewan post-secondary training program in a designated trade.
